Choose Swedish to relax: long strokes at light to medium pressure, head to toe. Choose Deep Tissue for a stiff back, tight shoulders or knots: slower, firmer pressure. At King Massage in Woodbridge, both cost $50 for 30 minutes or $70 for 60.
How Swedish massage feels
Swedish feels smooth and flowing. Long strokes at light to medium pressure warm the muscles from the shoulders down.
There is no deep work on knots. The pace is easy, and the aim is comfort.
It is the usual pick for a first visit. More on our Swedish Massage page.
How deep tissue massage feels
Deep tissue feels slow and firm. Your therapist presses into the upper back, neck and shoulders.
More time goes to the spots that feel tight, the kind a desk, a long commute or a workout leaves behind.
It should never hurt. Tell us and we ease off. More on our Deep Tissue Massage page.

Picking between them
Pick by your goal for the hour. To switch off, book Swedish. To work on a stiff back, book Deep Tissue.
Your taste in pressure matters too. Some guests find light strokes too soft, and others find firm pressure too much.
New to massage? Start with Swedish and ask for firmer pressure once you know how it feels.
How firm is too firm?
Too firm is when you tense up or hold your breath. Good pressure feels strong while you still breathe easily.
Speak up the moment it feels like too much. Your therapist starts moderate and adjusts from what you say.
A bit of both
You can ask for a mix. Plenty of guests want an easy pace overall with firmer work on one or two tight spots.
Shiatsu is another option if you like steady pressure without long strokes.
